i-lign Conversations

In i-lign 5.0, we launched a new feature, Conversations. See the thinking behind conversations at Enterprise 2.0 rocks!. Every page within i-lign (excluding lists) has the orange button with the cross through it, providing the user the ability to start a conversation. This conversation appears to everyone involved with that topic, be it a project, risk, decision, strategic outcome, concept, etc. Conversations can also be started as organisation wide broadcasts.

This article explains how to add Strategic Outcomes, Programme Objectives and Project Benefits. All these items can be linked to one another.

Linking Value Management Items

To link a Project Benefit to a Programme Objective, or a Programme Objective to a Strategic Outcome:

  • go to the Benefit / Objective you want to link
  • click Add Measure,
  • and on the Measures pop-up, find the Objective or Outcome using the selection tool.

Tagging Projects for Use as Templates

Tagging projects for use as importable project templates saves project managers a lot of time when setting up projects that repeat the same structures, such as roll-outs, implementations, policy development, and so on.

Value Management in i-lign

i-lign has a consistent framework for measuring and reviewing value across the Strategic Layer, Programmes and Projects.

You can link all three levels, showing Project Benefits contributing to Program Objectives, and these Objectives contributing to Strategic Outcomes.

Both qualitative and quantitative measures can be defined at each level, and these can be periodically reviewed to track progress.

How i-lign Links Performance Measures

In i-lign, value measures at Strategic, Programme and Project level can be linked.

These are the rules used by the software for linking.

(If you are a an i-lign Co-ordinator, or have a particular interest or expertise in value management, you might be interested in this, but otherwise you really don't need to know.)

1. A Measure in a Strategic Outcome can have a contributing Measure from a Programme Objective if the Strategic Driver is linked to the Programme or one of its descendants (Programmes have to be current).

The Project Resource Planning List

The Project Resource Planning List consolidates planned Project and Resource information, from the current month and for the following eight months.

Project Resource Planning information can be accessed from the Project Resources view in each Programme or Team consolidated view.

What's the difference between an Activity and a Project?

An Activity is not part of a Project. It is one of those vital pieces of work that happens outside of any Projects. However, it may be grouped with other work under a Programme.
