Portfolios are a means of clustering work across similiar management dimensions (e.g. marketing, product development etc).

The value of portfolio management is that it exposes relationships across pieces of work and breaks down the isolation that can come with silo management. Portfolio management is predicated on ownership being assigned pan-enterprise, as well as being assigned at project level.

In order to create and manage Portfolios in i-lign, you must be approved to do so by the system administrator.

New Portfolios

To create a new Portfolio, go to the Jump To menu and click on Portfolios. Click the New button on the right.

On the New Portfolio page, enter the Portfolio's name and select an Owner from the drop-down list of resources.

You may also wish to enter a Description of the Portfolio and some Notes, and comments on the Owner's Responsibilities.

You can add Organisation, Programme or Project items to the Portfolio by clicking on Add Item (lower right).

 Sample Portfolios

Defining the right portfolios for your organisation is often an iterative process, and will depend on the nature of your organisation. For example,

  • A service-based or not-for-profit organisation may use portfolios focussing on Policy Development, Service Delivery, Corporate Support, Stakeholder Management and Programme Delivery.
  • A commercial company may use portfolios focussing on Product Development, Sales and Marketing, Governance and Customer Support.
